Meet the talent - introducing Scholarship Award holder Joel Gyesi

The Rhythm Studio Foundation currently awards 18 means-tested scholarships to an incredibly talented group of hard-working and committed musicians who might otherwise be  prevented from pursuing their passion for music.

Meet Joel

Joel is a Year 13 student studying Maths, English and Philosophy. Joel composes music, has taught himself piano and has drum lessons with Kaja at The Rhythm Studio.

What are you working on at the moment?

"I'm learning Tank by the Seatbelts, a song from a show called Cowboy Bebop."

Favourite artists?

"Steve Gadd would be one of my favourite performers. I do enjoy listening to Snarky Puppy, Kendrick Lamar, Nas, Mumford and Sons and Ben Howard."

Favourite gig?

"I have performed at the The Dock Kitchen and KPH. The former would have to be my favourite because I real enjoyed meeting and playing with Maya and Caitlin; both are great at what they do."

Future plans/goals?

"In a year's time, I hoped to have significantly improved my skills and techniques, to push me closer to the level of other drummers at my church. As I'll be at Uni I may look to join a band or even teach other students to play the drums or piano."

"The RSF Scholarship has allowed me to improve my drumming skills, as well as boosting my

    confidence" - Joel Gyesi
